Federal Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair held a news conference in Ottawa following a meeting of his provincial and territorial counterparts last week.

Blair told reporters they discussed developing a national action plan for 2023-24 and strengthening the national public alerting system.

“Today we focused on the emergency management strategy and the 2023-24 action plan, and our need to continue to work to build back stronger while investing in disaster prevention and whole of society collaboration and mitigation,” Blair said.

“Key initiatives that we discussed included strengthening our national public alerting systems, which is essential to keeping Canadians safe and helping them take action in the face of imminent or unfolding events. My colleagues and I also discussed the public safety broadband network. This is a secure high-speed network that will facilitate communication for emergency responders and the public, reiterating our commitment to collaborate across all orders of government and to move forward together on this very complex issue,” he said.
